Living in Hawaii, RAMEN is viewed as precious as water or air. If you were born and raised in the islands, there's certainly a chance that you could point out what makes RAMEN great for you. If you're a visitor who enjoys this bowl of noodle heaven, than you have reached you're "Shangri-La" being here! WELCOME!
Many well written editorials will compare, contrast and in the end "RANK" who's making the "BEST RAMEN". In my personal opinion, each restaurant will create their bowls of beautifulness in their own way. There ISN'T an almighty "Book Of Ramen" that puts you down for liking it a certain way or condemn you to "BAD FOOD" Oblivion. If you're a first time eater of RAMEN or a seasoned veteran of the bowl, my advice is to find what works for you and slurp away!
Yesterday, I was invited back to visit Shirokiya Japan Village Walk in the Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. I consider myself a "regular" as I dine there approximately 2-3 times a week (but I KNOW there's people there EV-VER-RY-DAY). And why not? The Shirokiya Japan Village Walk offers a selection of dozens of restaurant (not all Japanese) to tantalize your taste buds.
I would normally visit one of the restaurants conveniently positioned in the front BUT I told myself to be a little more adventurous (with the new year coming), so I ventured to the rear of the establishment and surprisingly ran into KAMITOKU RAMEN. "OH MY GEEZ". My first encounter with KAMITOKU RAMEN stems from an event held on the USS Missouri on Pearl Harbor. KAMITOKU RAMEN was there with a long line starting from the middle of their food truck...that's right a FOOD TRUCK!
KAMITOKU RAMEN has been set up at the PAU HANA MARKET in Waikiki for quite some time. Lucky tourists in the area are able to bask in this RAMEN pleasure on the daily!
Well, maybe the same can be said to me as I can easily visit KAMITOKU RAMEN in Shirokiya Japan Village Walk anytime.
The "RAMEN TRIFECTA" (or so we called it) consisted of BEEFY TANTAN, BEEFY WILD, and BEEFY SPICY! (gosh, these sound like a team of wrestlers!). In all honestly, this SHOULD be a team of wrestlers as each dish packs a punch in their own unique way.
THE BEEFY TANTAN
THE BEEFY SPICY
THE BEEFY WILD
I ordered the BEEFY WILD and it was a "party in my mouth". The broth was savory but not too rich, the noodles perfectly cooked, not too soft, not too hard, and finally... the BEEF-TASTIC EPICENTER to this entire dish was the BEEF CHAR CUI! I don't know if the beef was dipped in "awesomeness" before being cooked with "blow my mind" spices but I was so impressed...
If you're ever in Ala Moana Shopping Center or in the Honolulu area and craving a bite...or a bowl, stop in at KAMITOKU RAMEN.
Ps. we ordered Gyoza to go with these bowls, but apparently I can't turn my back on HANGRY friends as when I returned from grabbing water and beer, the gyozas' were GONE! (so I didn't get pictures...) #SorryBoutIT
