Shaping Each Meal, One Dish At A Time

When I visit restaurants, I have a few points of interests that I keep a careful watch over...

  • The first is the entrance. It makes a huge impact as this is the customer's first impression of the business. Are you greeted when you come in? Is the entrance clean? Is there anything interesting that grabs your eye upon first walking in?

  • The second is the restroom. Is it clean?

  • And finally, is the dishware...

I LOVE going to eat at a restaurant and seeing delightful and creatively designed plates, bowls and cups. It only seems fitting that after eating at so many restaurants, I finally meet the man behind my "ooh's and ahh's," my endless selfies with plates and cups, and the reason I change out my dishes every 6 month to make room for a new batch. Join me and say hello to MARK KUHN (Owner-Operator-Crafter of KUHN'S POTTERY).

If you ever drank a cup of coffee from Chad Lou's Coffee Lounge in Kailua or feasted at The Pig & The Lady in Chinatown Honolulu, then chances are you and Kuhn's Pottery are already friends. Many of Mark's masterful creations can be found at restaurants throughout Hawaii.

How did this passion begin?

"Mark Kuhn is originally from southwestern PA, and has been behind the potter's wheel for over 25 years. His passion for pottery started when he was in high school, and led him to pursue further training in the medium. He received a degree in art education, with a concentration in ceramics from California University of PA in the early 90’s. In July 2013, he relocated from PA to Hawaii, and has become involved in the local artist community, including the Hawaii Potter’s Guild. He has a passion for functional, wheel thrown ceramics, which integrate both high craftsmanship and sculptural

alterations." - Kuhn's Pottery -

From sake glasses to coffee cups, plates and bowls, vases, centerpieces and entryway sculptures. Gosh, the list goes on and on. Is there anything this man can't create?

Mark makes these incredible pieces NOT ONLY for restaurants, corporate events and retailers but for the people of Hawaii (and beyond). Everything is made with his own two hands. If you're interested in seeing a gallery of designs he has already created and sold CLICK HERE.

To be honest, I've seen Mark's pottery in a few establishments around Oahu and each time I had to lift it up, look underneath and make sure I find his logo.

Supporting small local businesses is such a pleasure for me, and seeing a business owner who shows so much passion for his craft and pride in his work is even better! If you're interested (and I hope you are) in seeing more of Mark's feats, follow him on his Instagram (if you don't have Instagram, don't worry...still click on the link as you'll still be able to see his fine work).

Kuhn's Pottery will also be participating in an event called "Empty Bowl Hawaii" taking place on Friday, March 31, 2017. This event was created by the HAWAII POTTERS GUILD in 2009. Ps. Take a look at what restaurants will be cooking up soups for this special event CLICK HERE!
