Getting The SCOOP at 8 1/2 Desserts
You never know where you are going to find your next big “Scoop”. Being new to the island means I rely heavily on suggestions from friends and strangers about new places to try. This time, it was Jim from my Blazing Saddles dance event, who told me about the most unusual ice cream shop and I just had to drag my wife in with me to try it!
8 ½ Desserts is a tiny slice of Neapolitan splashed color, wedged between white washed buildings. Robert, the owner, greeted us as we approached the shop and welcomed us in for the mother of all sampling experiences! While shave ice is the
norm for cool and refreshing desserts on the island, Robert is putting ice cream and sorbet on the map with flavors that truly represent what is uniquely Hawaiian.
Have you ever tried Haupia ice cream? How about Mango with a Shoyu drizzle or Lilikoi with a dash of Tabasco Salt? We were treated to Guava, Green Tea, White Peach and so many fresh and delightful combinations, I must have used up a small redwood tree in taste spoons. I settled on a Kona ice cream sandwich with almond cookies which was colossal.
