SB #005: Roll Up to UP ROLL CAFE'

September 11, 2016

As a supporter of small local businesses in Hawaii, I've accepted the thrill of finding small businesses hidden in plain site.  This incredible place in Honolulu is certainly no different.

Hidden off the main strip from Ala Moana Boulevard (close to Kapiolani Blvd) is a "made fresh when you order it" type of restaurant that opens your mouth (and mind) to a variety of flavors.  Like I always say to my friends, "don't be afraid to ROLL UP to Up Roll Cafe".

Located at 665 Halekauila Street, C101, Honolulu, Hi  96813 on the bottom floor of the Halekauila Place, you will find a not-so-secret spot that people throughout Hawaii has been coming to visit.

The first time I came here, I thought it would be like every other cafe that just makes sandwiches and coffee but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this cafe offers so much more!

By looking at the menu, you'll see they offer a custom made hand roll or bowl...

As a rule of thumb, I always try to order from a SPECIALS menu if a business provides one but today I couldn't miss out on the latte that has been haunting my dreams and taste buds for the past few weeks since last coming to feast here (you'll see what I'm talking about below).

From looking at the menu, you can tell they offer a choice for everyone!  From vegetarian, vegan or the friendliest meat and chicken eaters.  They offer no discrimination when it comes to your palette.  The best part of ordering here is they allow you to place WHATEVER you want in your roll or bowl.

Come to back of the restaurant when you enter, here you will find a plastic menu where you will be able to choose the type of fillings you want to complement your protein selection.  Finally, before turning in this menu to get started, be sure you choose from six of their homemade sauces.  (My mouth is watering just thinking about this...)

Kinako Latte (Roasted Soy Bean Powder)   *My personal favorite!

Teriyaki Chicken Roll with Kim Chee, Edamame

Inari Tofu Bowl with Corn and Ginger Dressing

Lemme be the first to tell you, the serving size is fairly large.  Friends of mine assumed they'd be getting a small roll (or bowl) and were shocked to see how thick and large it was when it came out of the kitchen.

PARKING.  Parking can either be found on the street (metered) or in the Halekauila Place parking facility.  Up Roll Cafe doesn't validate the parking but the price for easily accessible and covered parking is very reasonable.  Just be sure to make your payment at the parking machine before leaving as you can't pay at the gate.

PERSONAL NOTE.  I'd like to say a big Mahalo to everyone at Up Roll Cafe as they have been consistently keeping their food tasty, fresh and inviting.  The Kinako Latte has always been a friend of mine as I can't seem to stop ordering.  It could be 95 degrees outside but the cool air conditioning inside the restaurant convinces me to get a hot latte!

I hope everyone has a chance to stop by and try them out.  Please let them know that you read about them from ELEV8 HAWAII as we LOVE them!  Also, be sure to check out their website to find out more about their specials and specifically "how to eat the roll".  :)

Thank you everyone for reading and sharing this with your friends.  Let's all support small local businesses in Hawaii together!!!
